Kirk Strawn. M.D., President & Medical Director
Kirk Strawn, M.D., is the founder, President, and Medical Director of PopHealthMan. Kirk is a board certified family physician and earned his medical degree at the University of Iowa. Prior to starting PopHealthMan and Secure Document Imaging, he was the director of Population Health Management at a large multi-specialty medical group practice, where he spent much of his career developing programs for high risk patients. His areas of interests include clinical information systems, high-risk population management systems, and end of life care.
Robert Carroll, Executive Vice President
Bob joined the PopHealthMan team in July of 2008, bringing with him over 25 years of leadership experience in the healthcare industry. His areas of expertise include finance and operations management, Medicare and Medicaid, medical group management, information systems, project management, and business development. In his current role, he has overall responsibility for the success of PopHealthMan and its sister organization, Secure Document Imaging.
Prior to joining PopHealthMan, Bob served as the Chief Operating Officer for a large multi-specialty medical group practice with over 160 physicians, 1,200 employees, and approximately 150,000 patients (including 34,000 Medicare Advantage members). He was responsible for the overall performance of the group including ensuring high quality of care, service levels, and financial results. In addition, Bob led the process of converting the group from hard-copy medical records to more efficient electronic health records.
Bob earned his Master of Health Services degree from Arizona State University and his Bachelor of Science in General Biology from the University of Arizona.
Debra Hecker, Chief Executive Officer
Deb joined PopHealthMan in June of 2008 and now provides her significant knowledge in optimizing Medicare Advantage revenue to our clients. In her previous role as CFO of a large medical group in Arizona, Deb was responsible for all things financial, with particular emphasis on Medicare Advantage Risk Adjustment revenue and related processes. Her experience includes the implementation of numerous initiatives to capture appropriate diagnosis codes both retrospectively and prospectively, in addition to the development of various metrics and measurement tools for tracking and reporting results.
Deb has been working with Medicare and Medicaid products for over 15 years. She is a Certified Public Accountant and received an MBA at Arizona State University and a BA in Accounting from Michigan State.
Brian Geroux, Vice President of Business Development & Sales
When Brian joined PopHealthMan in January of 2010, be brought more than 25 years of experience working in the healthcare industry. Prior to joining our company, Brian held a variety of sales and sales leadership roles in the health insurance industry, where he worked primarily with large regional and national account segments. He also led market development activities to identify and expand new and existing distribution channels. Most recently, Brian served as Regional Vice President of Sales and Distribution for a large multi-line insurance carrier in the western United States where he was responsible for new sales growth and the retention of a large client base consisting of nearly one million members throughout the region.
Brian earned his Bachelors degree in Business Administration from Northern Arizona University.
Royce Brownfield, Senior Director of Product Development & Client Analytics
Royce has been working in healthcare analytics for more than 20 years and has been deeply involved in CMS Risk Adjustment since 2002. Prior to founding PopHealthMan with Kirk, Royce was an integral member of a multi-disciplinary task force that increased the Risk Adjustment Factor and revenue of an Arizona MAPD plan by 20% over three years. In doing so, he investigated and discovered several sources of lost diagnosis data, thereby improving the documentation of that plan’s illness burden.
Since joining PopHealthMan, Royce has used his extensive expertise to design the vital tools used to manage the Risk Adjustment process for our clients. He consults directly with our clients and combines a unique blend of available tools and services to optimize their revenue to the fullest potential.
Royce has an MBA from the University of Texas. He and his family reside in the Phoenix area.
Justin Michael, Director of Information Technology
In addition to his duty to ensure the reliability and integrity of PopHealthMan's technical infrastructure, Justin serves as our Security Officer. In this role, he contributes to the development and implementation of policies and procedures designed to keep sensitive information safe.
Justin came to PopHealthMan in November of 2007 to assist in the development of the organization’s proprietary systems. Shortly thereafter, he became our dedicated Systems Administrator, where he further developed and managed PopHealthMan's IT infrastructure before assuming his current role in April of 2012.
Nicole Svoboda, Director of Client Services
Nicole is responsible for customer and data support to all of PopHealthMan’s clientele. She also provides consulting services with an emphasis on enrollment, marketing, compliance, pharmacy data encounters (PDE), and Risk Adjustment. Nicole has over 15 years of health plan operations experience with commercial, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid plans.
Prior to joining PopHealthMan, Nicole was the Enrollment Operations Manager for two Medicare Advantage special needs plans located in Maryland and Delaware. She holds a degree in Healthcare Management.
Laurence Cavanaugh, Director of Financial Forecasting & Analytics
Larry has extensive background and expertise in the health care industry, public accounting, financial reporting & analysis, and operational auditing & insurance consulting.
Prior to joining PopHealthMan, Larry spent more than 23 years with a national multi-line insurance carrier with an emphasis on commercial HMO, Medicare, and Medicaid product offerings. He has experience with a number of diverse operating models, including staff model operations based around hospital systems and large multi-specialty medical practices. In addition to his responsibilities regarding reporting and analysis for the HMO book of business, Larry developed a process for claim payment accuracy review that became the model for a national overpayment recovery team.
Larry is a Certified Public Accountant and received a BS in Accounting from West Chester University in Pennsylvania. Originally from the Philadelphia area, Larry has lived in Arizona since 1995.
Matt Heninger, Director of Client & Corporate Reporting and Analysis
Matt joined PopHealthMan in January of 2009. He brings with him more than 20 years of analytical and reporting expertise, along with a host of medical expense, revenue, and utilization analytical design tool skills. Matt has designed multiple reporting products and techniques to measure productivity, improve utilization, maximize revenues, and track quality. Before joining PopHealthMan, Matt spent 15 years in various financial management roles with three of the largest managed care companies in Arizona. He also spent 6 years as the Chief Financial Officer of a large physician /hospital owned management company in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Matt earned a BA in Japanese and an MBA with an emphasis in Finance, both from Brigham Young University.
Paul Sparrow, Director of Database Management
Paul has nearly 20 years of experience with relational databases and application development that includes database design, structured query language, data mining, reporting, and business analysis. Having worked for a major managed care company and a large hospital-based healthcare system, Paul has extensive experience with both the insurance and provider sides of healthcare.
Paul holds a Bachelors of Engineering from the Cooper Union College in New York City. He also earned Master’s degrees in both Business and Healthcare Administration from Hofstra University on Long Island, NY.
Chris Robinson, Encounter Database Manager
Chris joined PopHealthMan in September of 2011 and brings more than 17 years of experience in database management systems, the last six of which he spent in planning, design, and database administration. Prior to joining PopHealthMan, Chris worked for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Division of Health Care Finance where he developed the database structure, integration solutions, and error reporting for all commercial carriers in Kansas. He also planned, developed, and implemented software solutions for disproportionate share payments for the state’s Medicaid eligibility system that included cost & error reporting, case auditing reports, and support for FQHCs & RHCs.
Chris has been working with the ANSI X12 specifications since August of 2009 and was instrumental in planning for the HIPAA 5010 transition for the State of Kansas's Medicaid system in October of 2010. Chris holds certifications in Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Planning and Implementation IT Business Analysis, SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Solutions development.
Kerrey Hunt, Project Manager
Kerrey brings nearly 20 years of health care experience to PopHealthMan, the last 10 of which have been dedicated to Medicare Advantage claim operations. Kerrey joined PopHealthMan in January of 2009 and is now the project manager for claim recovery services and the chairperson for our compliance committee.
Prior to working at PopHealthMan, Kerrey was the Claim Operations Manager for an Arizona Medicare Advantage health plan. Tasked with improving the total claim experience, Kerrey’s role promoted and guaranteed claim quality, compliance, vendor & matrix partner efficiencies, accurate programming, and provider appeal resolution.
Since joining PopHealthMan, Kerrey has applied her analytical expertise to refine technical algorithms and unlock claim recovery opportunities totaling more than $2.5 million for hospice enrollees alone. Through the identification and interpretation of Medicare Advantage rules, Kerrey seeks to improve each client's financial outlook. Her claim recovery approach includes, but is not limited to, identification of overpayments, payment reconciliation, provider notification, and continuous health plan interaction.
Kerrey holds a BA from California State University, Fresno and is dually licensed for life and health insurance in Arizona.
